Where the name came from
Two stories came together in one name.
In Latin, there are two words that, when vowel length is not marked, are written almost identically: catella. This is not one word with two meanings. They are two separate linguistic histories that happened to meet in nearly identical forms.
catēlla
The other, catēlla, means a delicate chain, often worn around the neck.
The name Catellae brings together two genuine Latin roots: a small dog and a delicate chain. We add a third meaning: closeness.
